Defender of Ukraine Day is officially celebrated, so it is a day off. Celebrating it on October 14, instead of the former February 23, in our country began in 2014, against the background of Russia's armed aggression in the Donbass and the annexation of Crimea.
This date was chosen taking into account the historical traditions of honoring the Ukrainian army. This day has long been celebrated as the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks and the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin, because the Mother of God was considered by the Cossack chivalry to be their heavenly patron and patroness.
In addition, October 14 is also considered the day of the founding of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a military-political unit of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), which fought for Ukraine's independence.
Today, Ukraine honors both modern defenders who defend the territorial integrity of our Motherland in the war with the Russian aggressor, and remembers the heroes of different epochs of our history.
On this day, it is necessary to remember the fallen soldiers and thank all our compatriots, men and women who dedicated their lives to defending the state.
Earlier, our city celebrated this day solemnly - with a festival of Cossack songs, bike rides and marathons, but this year, during the period of severe quarantine restrictions, there will be no entertainment. Flowers will be laid at the monuments to the fallen defenders.
